A “Secret Screening” event turned out to be “Rental Family” starring Brendan Fraser. In case you are not familiar, a secret screening is effectively a mystery film. You book and then watch a surprise film that may not be on general release yet.

A comedy drama where Fraser plays an actor employed by a Japanese agency. Clients recruit them to fulfil roles, essentially playing a particular part in someone else’s life e.g a father.

Set in Japan, much of the film is subtitled but it’s certainly different and entertaining enough. 

It’s mildly amusing but not laugh-out-loud funny. The cast delivers touching performances and the film is sentimental with a reflective quality.

This isn’t a film I’d rush to watch again but our tastes differ and I’m sure many others would enjoy it far more than I did. 

The film has generally received positive reviews and ratings, proving a success. Fraser delivers an excellent performance alongside a strong supporting cast.

The film is on general release from Friday the 16th of January.
