“Primate” Review

I enjoy a bit of horror but most films in the genre are hit or miss. Unfortunately some of the worst films that I’ve seen recently have been in this film category. However I had higher expectations for this one prior to viewing as the trailer looked decent and the effects seemed more high-end.

Lucy’s tropical island homecoming turns deadly when her family’s clever chimpanzee, Ben, becomes rabid. With her father away and no help coming, paradise becomes a prison as Lucy and her friends fight for survival against a pet they once trusted.

The film quickly sets the scene without wasting time. A family who own Ben the chimpanzee notice a change in behaviour when the usually placid Ben becomes violent after contracting rabies. He’s no longer safe to be around!

Ben is incredible and looked very realistic, at least to me since I was without my glasses! However, strangely when he’s raging he seems to grow in size. He’s large when angry and smaller when calm.

This film is fun and entertaining but still falls into the average bracket. That’s high praise considering some recent poor horror films like Return to Silent Hill and Freddy’s 2. The cast also supports well and unless you’re one of Ben’s family members, good luck!

It’s a light, enjoyable film that’s perfect for relaxing and unwinding. It’s not going to blow the box office away but it’s definitely watchable.
