My local Cineworld Rugby is one of the older branches in the chain and lacks some of the modern touches you find at newer locations. That said, it still delivers the essentials perfectly well: films, food and drink, and a reliable cinema experience. As an Unlimited member for the past eight months, I had been keen to try both a Superscreen showing and 4DX, neither of which are available in Rugby.

This week we visited The O2 while our daughter attended a Raye concert. We were genuinely impressed with the whole O2 complex, which offers far more than just the arena itself. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and leisure facilities, making it feel like a destination in its own right. I’m also old enough to remember its previous life as the Millennium Dome, which I visited many years ago, so it was interesting to see how much the venue has evolved.
We were also surprised to discover that Cineworld London – The O2 Greenwich is the largest cinema in London. It is an enormous venue and we decided to take the opportunity to watch Michael again, this time on the Superscreen.
What is Superscreen?
Superscreen is exactly what the name suggests: a huge cinema screen, reportedly around 30 feet high, combined with powerful Dolby Atmos sound. The screen itself was incredibly impressive, but it was the overall scale of the auditorium that really stood out. We were seated in the balcony section in large, comfortable seats, and the whole experience felt far more immersive than a standard cinema screening.
Watching a music biopic on a screen of that size, backed up by such strong sound quality, made a real difference. Every musical moment felt bigger and more impactful. As Unlimited members, we only had to pay a small uplift fee because our local branch falls into Cineworld’s Group 2 pricing, while the O2 is a Group 3 cinema. Interestingly, there was no additional charge specifically for the Superscreen itself as unlimited members.
If I had easier access to Superscreen showings, I would happily watch films this way more often.
The O2 branch itself is hugely impressive, featuring 19 screens and holding the title of London’s biggest cinema. Hopefully, at some point in the future, I’ll finally get the chance to experience 4DX as well.
