Many of us disagree at times with film reviews. I for one have watched a few enjoyable films recently where they have received very poor online write-ups.
Masters of the Universe is a prime example of a film criticised in reviews yet surprisingly enjoyable. Supergirl and Moana also faced similar reception, though all three eventually garnered more positive audience feedback. While these films may not have attracted the hoped-for cinema and studio audiences, they certainly proved popular with viewers who watched.
While there is always a place for differences in online reviews/opinions and audience perceptions, sometimes online and published reviews can fail to recognize how a general audience may appreciate a film, that is enjoyable, entertains, and provides a feel-good factor.
Critics writing reviews are not always wrong, and they are entitled to opinions. No doubt recognising that I have shared various views on films myself. But we can get bogged down in observations and analysis that can be unfair and affect a film’s performance at the box office unintentionally.
The latest Disney Moana film is a good example where a general hate for Disney remaking animated films frame by frame as live action was an issue for some. Many didn’t appreciate that a new audience not familiar with the original film could enjoy it immensely. I certainly enjoyed it and I had not seen the original animated movie.
Critical reviews will also measure against set criteria, whereas all an audience member is interested in is whether they enjoyed it and had a good time. Hence you get differences between average critic scores and audience feedback.
The other important thing perspective-wise is to remember the occasional viewer is watching a film to unwind, using the experience for escape and relaxation. A critic is doing a job watching so many films, no doubt with tight deadlines. They are then trying to come up with angles to explore. A professionals take if you like.
What are your thoughts on this subject? Do we need a balance between traditional scoring and new criteria like enjoyment factors and overall movie craft?
