“Coyote Vs. Acme” Review

This new animated live-action film features all our favourite Looney Tunes characters. Is it aimed just at children or adults reminiscing?

This one flew under the radar for me, and the first I knew of it was when I saw an online review this week. Spotting a convenient early morning showing on a Saturday, I thought it would be worth seeing. I always liked a bit of Road Runner. Beep Beep.

Starring Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner, and many more, including the odd surprise. It’s a who’s who of Looney Tunes, with most characters making an appearance. They are supported by Will Forte, Lana Condor, and John Cena. It’s a surprisingly entertaining film that will captivate kids, but will be most appreciated by adults of a certain age. While anyone can follow the story, those who grew up watching the original cartoons will truly get the history and the premise.

Live-action animation films are generally poor, but this one was surprisingly entertaining. The animation is good, with the characters realistically fitting into the real world. Voice animation for most of the characters is also good. There is a story appropriate to Looney Tunes history, and it brought the odd smile and chuckle. It’s not laugh-out-loud funny, but it is great family-friendly escapism.

At 103 minutes, I did find the ending slightly long and drawn-out. Easily 10 minutes could be shaved off for a tighter, faster-paced conclusion. Other than classic cartoon sound effects, the soundtrack is minimal. Unless you are an older Looney Tunes fan, I would probably recommend streaming this if you think your young ones would enjoy it. Interestingly, the audience for a 10:00 AM Saturday morning showing had no children at all, just adults, probably 40-plus, who all appeared to genuinely enjoy the experience.

After enduring decades of catastrophic product failures and bodily harm at the hands of ACME, Inc., a fed-up Wile E. Coyote finally decides to fight back. Teaming up with a down-on-his-luck billboard accident lawyer named Kevin Avery (Will Forte), the iconic cartoon canine files a massive lawsuit against the profit-obsessed conglomerate for selling defective merchandise. The unlikely duo must face off against ACME’s slick in-house corporate counsel, Buddy Crane (John Cena), uncovering a deeper corporate cover-up along the way in this blend of live-action and animated courtroom comedy.
