A brand-new reboot with a new cast and story.

I really enjoyed this latest entry in the franchise. There’s no need to have watched any of the previous films, which this time follows a medical courier called Bryan (Austin Abrams) who needs to make an urgent delivery to Racoon City Hospital.

A basic story but full of thrills and action capturing the video games. A decent CGI budget with first-class effects help bring the chaotic nature of those infected to life. The soundtrack is atmospheric and adds to the tension. Littered with some light tongue in cheek humour to support the survival horror,

Abrams delivers a decent performance as Bryan and has screen time for the entire film. He is the only main cast member, with other cast making shorter appearances during his journey. As a new story and character, Bryan is not familiar with what has been happening in Racoon City. The cinematography nicely captures the dark nature of the environment and reflects the computer games that the film is based on. Some little Easter egg nods are littered throughout the film for those who have played the games, with the typewriter, medical kit/bag, herb plants and of course the infected from the game.

The film most definitely had a decent budget and Zach Cregger directs He also co-wrote the film and has done a fantastic job. If you haven’t seen a Resident Evil film before but like horror, this could be a good place to start. Some decent scares, unexpected moments and decent pacing generally throughout. The film length is ideal (94 minutes) and the end is pretty good as well. I can’t say anymore to avoid spoiling things but I went away satisfied and the film completes without cliff hangers etc. Some unexpected twist elements are also thrown in to conclude that I don’t expect.

Fun and a good watch. Definitely recommended.

Directed by Zach Cregger, Resident Evil (2026) is a fresh cinematic reboot that follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), an ordinary medical courier who unwittingly finds himself caught in a terrifying, high-stakes race for survival when a viral outbreak plunges Raccoon City into absolute chaos during a fateful winter night.
