Cinema Snacks – Are They Too Expensive?

Do you buy your snacks at the cinema, or sneak them in from your local shop?

While many people don’t realise it, the majority of major UK cinema chains actually allow you to bring your own food, provided it isn’t hot or smelly. Even knowing these rules, I still tend to “smuggle” can drinks in rather than confidently strolling in with them!

For casual cinema goers, stopping by a local shop before a film is often a financial necessity. When a tub of popcorn and a drink cost nearly as much as the ticket itself, bringing your own sweets and snacks feels like the only way to make a night out affordable.

However, there’s another side to the coin. Cinemas make very little profit on ticket sales, with most of that money going straight back to the studios. It’s the food/concession stand that helps keeps the lights on. The industry took a massive hit during the pandemic, and chains are still fighting hard to survive. If we don’t support the cinema food counter, we risk losing the big-screen experience entirely.

It’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation: prices are high because fewer people buy food, but fewer people buy because prices are high. Could a higher volume of sales eventually drive prices down naturally?

Interestingly, cinema memberships completely flip this behavior. As a member of a cinema chain that offers a pass via membership, I actually buy popcorn, pick n’mix and drinks at the counter quite a lot. Not only does this support my cinema, but my membership gives me a 25% discount, bridging the gap between convenience and affordability. Plus, let’s face it, nothing beats the taste of fresh, warm cinema popcorn compared to a stale, pre-packaged bag from the supermarket. The cinemas also know that most members are more likely to buy food with the discounts offered to them.

When I’m not being stingy, treating myself feels justified. But what about you? Are you a food smuggler, or do you buy food at the cinema?
