“Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy” Streaming Review

Mo Gilligan eats only fried chicken for 28 days.
Will his health survive this challenge?

In 2004 a documentary filmmaker by the name of Morgan Spurlock released his now infamous documentary, ‘Super Size Me‘. In it, Spurlock commits to eating McDonalds foods for every meal for one entire month. The results of the effects on his physical and mental health were astounding and profoundly disturbing.

Now in 2026, British comedian Mo Gilligan attempts the same experiment, eating nothing but fried chicken from fast food restaurants for 28 days.

What I thought I was walking into was a direct imitation of Spurlock’s documentary, and in many ways, it is. It has the same experiment, the same talking points, but what it doesn’t have is the personal shock factor that Spurlock had on his overall health. Yes, Mo undergoes changes physiologically, but it’s his mental health that i think suffered far worse.

In often raw and very emotionally charged scenes, Mo breaks down as the effects of eating nothing but fried chicken takes it’s toll.
We all think chicken is good for us right? Take off the skin, and what you have is a virtually fat free meat. Unfortunately this is not the case with highly processed meats infused with chemicals to help make the food tasty and have that all important reward feeling to the brain, making us come back time and time again.

Now I admit that any experiment that deals with extremes will always, without doubt, have extreme consequences and side-effects. We can see obesity levels rise across the globe, and also a rise in diseases such as Diabetes and Coronary Artery Disease. Right, so now we have a good idea of how a prolonged diet like this can and will affect us. What’s really striking and upsetting are the business practices used by the farmers who farm these chickens en-mass.
I won’t go into details here, purely because it’s a review not a side-piece on unethical farming. What I will say is that I was absolutely amazed and shocked at how the laws in the U.S. allow for loop holes to be exploited regarding the disclosure of ingredients that go into this hyper-processed meat. Not just that, but child labour with highly toxic chemicals, and unsafe machinery cleaning all lead to catastrophic results.

Let’s face the facts. We will all continue to consume these foods at one time or another, no matter how disgusted or upset a documentary will make us. We are programmed by the very nature of how these products reward that part of our brains to continue eating it. And why not? In moderation, it’s perfectly safe!?

As with all my reviews, I break each component down and look at it from a more detailed standpoint, but here I can’t because it’s a documentary. Mo is very funny at times, and does a great job in becoming, at least in part, an investigative journalist, even if that’s a mantel he would rather not pursue.
The investigative work is methodical and looks at all aspects of the food service industry, focusing on chicken. Unfortunately, what we find are a few good points, and a lot of bad that may just turn you away from fast fried chicken tonight!

While not as good as ‘Super Size Me’, this comes a close second. Do I recommend you watch this? Yes, absolutely. It may just open your eyes to a world that remains hidden from the average, everyday consumer like us. It may just open your eyes wide enough to ask yourself; Can I support this industry with my hard earned money?

I have asked myself if I should score this and i decided that it should be treated like any other review on this site. However, with that said, please don’t go into this swayed by this review. Make your own mind up by seeing it for yourself.

I give this documentary…
