While I appreciate the talent that is Olivia Colman, I wasn’t entirely sure about the trailer, though I did enjoy some of its humor. Suspecting the film would still be enjoyable, I took a chance. Would it be as bonkers a comedy as advertised? And would it just be another romance film?

Olivia Colman plays a lonely fisherwoman who is looked down upon by her local villagers. Desperate for companionship and love, she commissions a custom husband to be crafted by the local basket weaver.
It is a delightfully surreal and bonkers film, beautifully brought to the screen with stunning sets and visual flair. The storytelling, particularly early on, moves at a brisk pace. Colman’s performance is outstanding, effortlessly conveying a full spectrum of emotion. Peter Dinklage, playing the basket weaver, makes the absolute most of his screen time with solo scenes that feel almost Shakespearean at times. The sound design and soundtrack fit the atmospheric tone perfectly, synchronizing seamlessly with Dinklage’s performance.
The visual world-building is equally impressive; though filmed on specially built sets in Hungary, the seaside village carries an almost Scandinavian charm on screen.
The supporting cast is packed with familiar faces, including a brief appearance from Richard E. Grant. Special mention goes to Alexander Skarsgård as the wicker husband, who turns in an impressively physical performance under what must have been an arduous makeup and costume process. Heavily restricted in his costume, he still conveys the dialogue of his character well.
At the cinema, the film appears to be drawing a decent audience after being marketed quite well. Refreshingly, the story holds back a few genuine surprises that weren’t spoiled in the trailers, a rarity in modern movie marketing. The film also has some darker elements in its storytelling that I also didn’t expect.
Overall, Wicker is a thoroughly fun, unique, and enjoyable film. Despite my initial assumption that it might lean toward a specific demographic, I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend a watch.
