On first seeing this film promoted, I thought it was like most animated films nowadays – computer-animated. Amazingly, I discovered that it is stop-motion, and it is remarkable. It looks amazing on the silver screen. But would the story be as good?

Despite being stop-motion, the film holds a 12A certificate, which is understandable as it is quite dark and features a story not suitable for younger children. Adults taking children aged 9 and above will likely be fine, but it is definitely not for younger kids.
The film is stunning, and it is unbelievable how good this stop-motion animation looks. The artwork and sets are amazing, and the studio uses modern stop-motion techniques to help bring the vision to life.
Throughout the film, the voice acting and sound design are excellent. All the character models equally look amazing. There are loads of characters and many, many locations. How they achieved bringing this creation to life is just unbelievable.
Story-wise, it could be frightening for a younger audience and features themes that may upset some. However, the story is well-written and quite involved for an animated film, grabbing your attention quickly right from the start. My only criticism is the length, it feels a bit too long at 2 hours and 10 minutes. No wonder it took a decade to make!
Overall, it’s an enjoyable film that has been crafted with love by a very artistic team with unbelievable attention to detail. Do try to see this one in the cinema while you can.
